Access to Medical Records

In general, under the Data Protection Act, 1998, patients have the right to information about their health from any practitioner who is treating them.  Applications must be in writing with the appropriate fee and the practice has 40 days in which to provide the requested information.  In certain circumstances, the Act allows the practitioner to withhold access to patient health records.

Violent and Abusive Patients

Our staff will do their best to assist patients at all times.  A surgery can be a busy and hectic workplace on occasions.  The practice operates a zero tolerance policy on violence and abusive behaviour towards our staff and other persons on the practice premises.  Such behaviour may lead to your being asked to leave the premises and removal from our practice list.  Where applicable, this would include all family members.  In extreme cases, the police will be called to the surgery.

Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities – which includes GP practices.  The practice has registered the required information with the Information Commissioner.

Patient Confidentiality

You can expect patient confidentiality to be maintained at all times. All our staff have access to patient information at various levels and receive appropriate training in handling this information.  We are registered under the Data Protection Act 1998 and will only give medical reports to third parties, such as insurance companies, in compliance with the Access to Medical Records Act 1988, in which case you would have signed a consent form giving us permission to do so.

Summary Care Records

The NHS are currently asking patients if they wish all their clinical data to be included in the summary care record.  If you do not wish to do this, please bring the relevant form with your registration pack into the surgery so we can record your wishes.
